Myths and Magick...
Perhaps because paganism encompasses so many different groups of people and belief systems, many misconceptions surround it. In The Sorcerer's Handbook, you'll find full explanations of the most common myths and misconceptions. Here are just a few summaries of myths you'll find 'exploded' in the book...
People say "Pagans worship Satan!"
Not true. Paganism doesn't even acknowledge the existence of Satan, in exactly the same way as it can't acknowledge the Christian, Jewish, and Islamic paternal God.
People say "Pagans hold ritual sacrifices!"
Not true. It's the old horror movie type-cast Satanist they're talking about! Even modern-day Satanists deny indulging in such practices; the gods of paganism don't demand sacrifices.
People say "Pagans hate and oppose the church!"
Not true. They just don't believe all the same things. Some of what the church teaches can be embraced by paganism, while other parts are rejected because they're too 'absolute' to be universally true.
People say "Pagans are headed for hell!"
Not true. Paganism doesn't acknowledge the church's absolutely final 'Heaven and Hell'. You can't go somewhere that doesn't exist!
People say "Paganism is disorganised!"
Not true. Paganism's strength comes through its freedom from structure: because it isn't a "religion of the book", everyone must explore life's possibilities and arrive at their own conclusions, shaping their own understanding in harmony with their experience of life and creation.
